A young painter stumbles upon an assortment of odd characters at an English estate where he has been hired to give art lessons to beautiful Laura Fairlie. Among them are Anne Catherick, a strange young woman dressed in white whom he meets in the forest and who bears a striking resemblance to Laura; cunning Count Fosco, who hopes to obtain an inheritance for nobleman Sir Percival Glyde, whom he plans to have Laura marry; Mr. Fairlie, a hypochondriac who can't stand to have anyone make the slightest noise; and eccentric Countess Fosco who has her own dark secret. The artist also finds himself drawn to Marion Halcomb, a distant relation to Laura whom the Count also has plans for.

Gloriously self-aggrandizing moviemaker Tom Palazzolo made an awesome feature debut with Caligari’s Cure. If you know your Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, you’ll remember that the orgasm of the 1919 German movie revealed that the ostensive villain had been really a psychiatrist, and the moderate hero a certified looney. Palazzolo uses generous chunks of Caligari, evaluating the expressionistic opposites of the previous film’s director Robert Wiene with contemporary artistic developments. It’s a fairly obvious stylistic workout, but it’s simply because entertaining as Palazzolo’s hallucinatory quick topics. Caligari’s Cure would make a felicitous double feature with the 1988 shorts set Palazzolo’s Chicago.

Taken from a review at Time Out: Excellent, factually based Civil War Western, in which Heflin's Confederate officer leads a group of soldiers, with whom he has escaped from a Union prison camp, in a plan to avenge the destruction of Southern communities by first taking over, and then sacking, a Northern town close to the Canadian border. Tension is slowly but surely built up as the men try to infiltrate the township; conflicting emotions arise with Heflin's growing respect for the widow with whom he lodges (Bancroft). Throughout, Fregonese makes superb use of Lucien Ballard's typically moody photography. This was the film that served as a springboard for John Arden in writing his play Serjeant Musgrave's Dance.
